Drupal 6.16 upgrade test

LOTS of modules were upgraded! I wonder if this all works? Nothing seems to have outright imploded.... yet. Shelley, can you poke around and make sure all extremities are still attached? :-) Thanks! (I'm not as sure which sections are important and which are not...)

NCRC: June. Island. Radio. Camp.

Gabriola Co-op Radio is hosting this year's National Campus and Community Radio Conference (NCRC) June 7-11.

It will be a week-long “Camp Radio” with a five-day immersion in all things radio, community and community radio — hosted in a beautiful rural island setting. (There’s even a campfire to gather round….)

The conference is open to all NCRA members as well as anyone else interested in expanding their radio skills and knowledge. But it won’t be all work and no play as we have also arranged lots of entertainment and time for networking outside workshops. See you in June!

Thank you and happy trails

Kevin Matthews started as Executive Director of the NCRA in March 2008 and is now moving on. His past community radio experience was at CJUM-FM in Winnipeg and he has also worked with alternative media and arts groups.

In his two years with us, Kevin oversaw many important changes to the organization, including an increased lobbying presence, more than 20 new members and some fancy new communications products (like the one you're reading.) He also managed a two-year grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation and laid the groundwork for future funding.

Quick-witted and kind, with ideas to spare, he helped many people and made many friends. He will be missed. Thanks to Kevin for all his work! We wish him well on everything that comes next.

Staffing change at NCRA/Anrec

We have a big change to announce: Shelley Robinson is the new Executive Director of the NCRA, starting today, 26 April. Shelley has been our Membership Coordinator from the end of December 2008 to this month, and her community radio history goes back to 1994 at CKDU-FM in Halifax.

In the new position, Shelley will continue to do much of the work she has been doing with members and communications but will also be taking on fundraising, advocacy and general administration. (But not much of the messy field reporting you see in this picture....)

CFRC gains student levy increase

CFRC, Canada's oldest campus broadcaster, enjoys increased financial support from its students. A parade through campus of station volunteers and supporters preceded the March 23 vote.

Get recognized: Community Radio Awards - new deadline!

You may already know about the NCRA's annual Community Radio Awards, which recognizes the amazing programming, people and activities of campus and community radio stations across Canada.

Now we have extended the deadline to give more time for your good work to flood in. The new deadline is midnight EST April 1, 2010. (No fooling!) So get cracking on your application.

The homelessness marathon is on now: tune in!

Starting at 5pm on Tuesday, February 23 until 7am the next morning the eighth annual Homelessness Marathon will once again serve up 14 hours of people-powered radio, broadcasting this year from almost 40 communitities across the country.

It's that time of year again: The NCRA Community Radio Awards!

Are you using community radio to help promote local talent, showcase diverse music and the artists who make it, contribute to your community or raise awareness of under-reported stories?

The NCRA Awards honour the amazing programming, people and activities our sector has to offer and reflect the range and diversity of community radio across Canada.

Winners receive national recognition at the NCRC Awards Gala on June 11, 2010 on Gabriola Island, British Columbia and on the NCRA website.

All work must have been aired on an NCRA member station between April 1, 2009 and March 1, 2010. The station must belong to the NCRA by the submission deadline.  Deadline for submissions: Monday, March 22 at 6pm EST. For more information click on the title of this post.
